Late last year when I watched St. Trinian’s I was impatient to see St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold , after all, it had already come out on DVD in Europe. Well, now the sequel is finally available in North America; to a certain extent at least.
Recently I spotted in the “New Releases” section of our local Video Rental store a copy of St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold; I quickly grabbed it and added it to our week’s selection of rentals. Before rushing back home though my husband had to pause to ask a little girl and her mother whether they had liked it, as apparently they had seen it. They loved it; so that clinched the deal for hubby.
This time at St. Trinian’s the girls are on a hunt for the legendary Fritton's Gold after discovering headmistress Miss Fritton, (Rupert Everett) is related to the famous pirate, Captain Archibald Fritton, (also played by Rupert Everett). Naturally, they have to keep one step ahead of a new villain who also has a family interest in the legendary treasure. This would be Sir Piers Pomfrey, (David Tennant) leader of women-hating secret society by the name of AD1, whose ancestor, Lord Pomfrey was outwitted by the pirate Fritton, (some 402 years ago as I recall).
Colin Firth is back as Geoffrey Thwaites, Camilla Fritton’s old flame who was utterly humiliated, disgraced and sacked from his job as Education Minister. Once again there’s some great moments between him and Rupert Everett.
Talulah Riley returns as Annabelle Lealla Fritton, and is the new Head Girl. Annabelle at times has trouble leading the girls but she soon comes around. The former Head Girl, Kelly Jones played by Gemma Arterton makes a guest appearance to lend a little support.
Celia Imrie returns as the lovable drunk Matron, Toby Jones returns as the quirky Bursar and Jodie Whittaker provides comic moments as Beverly, the spacey Receptionist.
Cloe and Holly Mackie return as Tania and Tara, the evil Twins. Ella Smith as Lucy, the Geek was an awesome new addition. Tamsin Egerton returned as Chelsea Parker, Posh Totty #1.
To the heart of the matter – whether or not I liked the movie...I liked it, I liked it a lot. My husband thinks it’s better than the first one. By that I mean the latest version; not The Belles of St Trinian's. As for myself I’m still mulling that one over. On the one hand I agree with my husband, on the other hand, at times I felt it lagged or lacked punch somehow. Then again, perhaps I’m just trying to find something a bit negative so that it doesn’t appear that I happen to love movies that are aimed at kids mainly; particularly little girls; and in the case of these versions of St Trinian’s, very much so. Over all I enjoyed it though. The story was interesting; the characters for the most part amusing, there were some wonderful gags and scenes and there was a great twist or two. So yes, overall St Trinian's 2 was a delightful movie and I recommend watching it.
At the time of this writing I’m not sure where one would get this movie on DVD in North America – I count myself lucky to have found a rental copy. E1 Entertainment was supposed to release it March 22, 2011, but perhaps that means that it’s only available on the rental list. St Trinian’s is available in a Region 2 format.
Watch St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold on DVD if You Can Find It.
(Note: the Movie is also known as St Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold)
