The reasons for me reviewing Eating Out 1 after having reviewed Eating Out 2 are almost as twisted as the movie itself. And by "twisted" I actually mean that's a good thing; for the most part...
Overall I did indeed enjoy watching Eating Out and thought it was pretty funny. However, the first scene did leave a slight sour distaste in my mouth.
In that scene, we're introduced to Caleb (Scott Lunsford) a sexy, passive straight guy and Tiffani (Rebekah Kochan) a slutty straight girl and they're having this consensual, fantasy role playing sex scene.
Now, although there were elements of comedy interjected into the scene; and although it was consensual fantasy role playing, I didn't find it particularly funny.
Call me oversensitive, overcritical or whatever, but there's other ways and indeed better ways to establish that Caleb is a gentle straight guy and Tiffani is a slut.
So, what's Eating Out about? Well, basically, after Caleb gets dumped by Tiffani he falls for Gwen (Emily Stiles aka Emily Brooke Hands) but Gwen only seems to fall for gay guys.
Which is great, because his roommate Kyle (Jim Verraros) has told him that the secret to scoring success is to pretend you're gay; that way you get all the girls chasing you and trying to convert you…
The ruse works, Gwen thinks Caleb is gay and sets him up with her roommate, Marc (Ryan Carnes) whom Kyle lusts for…
Now, if you think the story can't get any more twisted you'd be wrong. It can and it does. The resulting confusion and hilarity that ensues is, well… hilarious.
Essentially, the story revolves predominately around Caleb and his relationship with Marc and Gwen. That's not to say that Kyle doesn't get a bit of the action but he doesn't really get to play a huge part or really shine until Eating Out 2. And to an extant the same is true with Tiffani.
By the way, if you're a fan of Jim Verraros (I'm fast becoming one) a number of the songs in Eating Out are sung by him and in many cases written by him.
The short analysis of the cast is that I thought they were well cast and that for the type of film it is (it is a comedy after all) they were believable.
Sex and the hint of sex… Yes, there is some sex in this movie. It depends on the scene as to whether it's funny or erotic.
None of the scenes are really explicit per-se, (at least not in the way I'm used to) but they are creatively shot and edited to good effect. If you want something more explicit, try a porn video instead.
From what I understand, Eating Out was writer and director, Q. Allan Brocka's first feature film. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his work because I thought that he told an interesting and funny story.
So, in conclusion I did enjoy watching Eating Out 1 and can see why it won a number of awards but I think I preferred the squeal, Eating Out 2 as it seems to be a more polished movie in my opinion.
