This past weekend, I finally watched a movie on DVD that I've been meaning to see for awhile; Dorian Blues...
Adolescence is proving a pain for Dorian (Michael McMillian). He's an outcast and the butt of classmate's jokes at high school and his football hero brother (Lea Coco) is constantly rescuing him. But everything finally begins to make sense when he realizes that he's gay. Before his conservative and homophobic dad (Steven C. Fletcher) can throw him out of the house he's off to NYU where he encounters a new world of cafes sophisticates and handsome men, as well as the seamier side of NY. This new life that he's been dreaming about forever proves just as frustrating as his world back home.
If comedic, coming-of-age / coming out types of movies appeal to you then you can't go wrong with Dorian Blues. I rather enjoyed watching it. The film was witty and painful. Painful in the sense that it was painful to watch what Dorian went through and yet at the same time there was a sense of wry wit about it. This was writer-director Tennyson Bardwell's debut film and unlike some directors who start off with a coming-of-age film it's not his last film. He's got one coming out this year and another in the works for next year.
I sat down to watch Dorian Blues feeling a little blue and out of sorts myself, but quickly got out of my funk and enjoyed watching the humor in Dorian's messed up life.
